Blogger Central at the National Sports Collectors Convention

I'm continuing my blog posts on Opportunities for Improvement with the National Sports Collectors Convention. Last week I blogged about a Ron Santo charity, simple ticket prices and a free sneak peak.

These are all ways to improve partnerships, pricing, marketing and vendor opportunities with the National. Hitting those keys areas can make the National more than just a sports memorabilia show - it can become a premier conference standard.

My question to the National: Is this the media most influential to your buyers?
The answer: Probably not.

Most collectors and hobby enthusiasts are not referring to page 2 of the ESPN website for their hobby news. They are reading sites like this and this and forums like this. It's time the National made it easier for their most influential outlets to cover their event. They need to have a Blogger Central.

What is Blogger Central?
It's a conference room with tables, chairs, outlets, free wifi and a place for bloggers to collect their thoughts and report on the National Sports Collectors Convention while they are at the event. Bloggers who want to write about the National should have to request credentials so they can have access to an area to report on their experience. Credentials should include:
  1. Access to Blogger Central room to report
  2. Access to some of the National organizers for interviews
  3. Access to behind the scenes of the National
Some of the blogs may not get the hits and media attention that some ESPN2 writers do, but in my opinion they are more influential to the buyers at the National.

Is a New Beckett Media Site Scheduled for 2011?

Beckett Media introducted new president, Brian Gulledge, on July 7, 2010. Part of Brian's opening remarks focused on the customer service issues of the Becket Media website and the plan to launch a new site in December, 2010.

At the time, I blogged that this was a pretty aggressive plan. Honestly, I don't visit the website much (I RSS the blog though), but I checked in on today and it looks the same to me.

Is there going to be a new website? Will it be in the last days of 2010? Will there be one in 2011?

Dmitri Young to be a Card Corner Club Radio Regular

Former All-Star and current hobby enthusianst, Dimitri Young is going to be a regular on Card Corner Club Radio.

Voice of the Collector announced this week that Young, a previous guest on the show, will soon be a regular contributor.

How cool is that?! Dimitri is more than a former major league player, he has a huge card collection and really gets into the hobby.

If the live show doesn't fit your schedule (Friday nights), then definitely subscribe via RSS. It's a great weekly recap of the week's hobby news.

Greatest Sporting Event I've Watched

The 30-Year Cardboard Blog posed an interesting question this week: "What is the Greatest Sporting Event You've Ever Watched." It doesn't have to be in person, it can be an event you watched on TV and you remember all the details.

I like to think I haven't seen it yet, but if I have witnessed my greatest sporting event, it's Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

I remember my parents going bed when Dave Henderson hit the home run to put the Red Sox ahead. They gave me the parental, "sorry James, maybe the Mets will do it next year" line. Lately, I've been using that same line on my boys, but that night, I refused to believe it.

I lived in a townhouse in south New Jersey at the time. My best friend was a Mets fan. We lived about 10 minutes from Philly, so you were a Mets fan or a Phillies phan. I remember thinking how terrible my 7th grade classmates were going to make fun of me and my best friend if the Mets lost that game to the Red Sox. I could hear Joe and Tony giving us all kinds of grief about the Mets. Even though the Phillies that season never smelled the post-season, I was preparing myself for a school day of ridicule.

The first two Mets were easy outs, including one of my favorites, Wally Backman. Then, my favorite player at the time came up - Gary Carter. Wow, this was going to be a terrible day at school coming up. Not only was I going to get made fun of for the Mets losing, but Carter was going to make the last out. When Carted lined his hit to the outfield I felt like the weight of the world had almost been lifted off my jr. high shoulders. Even if the Mets lost, at least it wasn't Gary Carter that ended.

We all know how it ended of course. I've watched the game on DVD and video more times than I want to admit. I remember sitting in the living room, just me, my dog and my Mets hat when Ray Knight scored on Mookie's "slow roller to first."

I know I woke up every neighbor when Ray Knight was escorted to home by Buddy Harrleson. I know I scared my dog with my yelling. I know I threw my Mets hat all over that room. I remember it perfectly.

I hope that isn't my greatest sporting event memory. I hope I get to live through an event like that with my kids.

Ex-Mets Player Digs Graves

Insert your own joke here:
"He must be the team doctor."
"Is he digging Omar's career grave?"
"Is that something Bobby Bonilla can do?"

Ex-Mets player, Richie Hebner is a grave digger. The Detroit News recently did an interview with him on the subject.

Hebner discusses driving the hearse in the off season, "It takes some getting used to. For one thing, I have to drive 20 miles an hour. That's not easy. Plus, there's no one to talk to. I'm in the vehicle alone. I mean, I'm the only living person in the vehicle. The other guy doesn't have much to say."

The Centerfield Maz blog had a good article on this last year.

Interview with Dick Perez - Diamond Kings Artist

The Hall of Very Good sent me an email the other day about interview he had with Dick Perez. I'm usually a little skeptical of the random, "hey look at my blog" emails, but this one was worth the read.

It's a really good interview with some insight into how Perez got started with Diamond Kings. I've liked the Diamond Kings collection so this was a fun read for me. Thanks for the emtail HOVG.

Bloggers Helping Bloggers - Frank White Autograph

Special thanks to Zach from the Autographed Cards blog.

Zach is going to the Kansas City Royals Fanfest on January 15 and offered to help get autographs. I'm not necessarily a Royals fan, but I desperately need Frank White's autograph. Frank White's autograph will complete my 1980 World Series autograph story baseball.

With one out, in game 6, Frank White hit a pop-up down the first base line. Bob Boone chased after it and tipped the ball just before Pete Rose could catch it from hitting the ground. Pete spiked the ball to the turf and ran back to first base.

Pete Rose signed the a 1980 World Series baseball for me saying, "I caught Boone's bobble in the 9th."Bob Boone last year added, "I'm the one that hustled on the play." What can Zach get Frank White to add?! I can't wait to find out.

Thank you Zach!

An Autograph Cowboys Chemo Celebration

The Jones Journey Blog will move you, inspire you, push you to hug your kids a little longer before going to work and motivate you to appreciate each moment you have.

I read this blog entry about Brayden having a special Dallas Cowboys themed Christmas. The highlight (for him) was receiving two autographed photos of Cowboys' running back Felix Jones. His nurse contacted the Cowboys, shared his story, and asked for the photos. The highlight for everyone else was seeing his smile and reaction.

Take a moment and read the blog entry about Brayden's Cowboy Christmas. While there is an element of collecting and loving your favorite team, this story is more about the good work that is done every day in hospitals and treatment centers around the country.

Hopefully Brayden's treatment continues to go well.

Real People Win Lou Gehrig Patch Cards

Congratulations to Zman40 of Autographed Cards. Using Random.org, Zman was the winner of the Lou Gehrig card for signing up to follow the Sports Locker blog.

Thanks to all who signed up.

I should have another give-away in the next week or so. From time-to-time I get these cards after my boys open their packs. We only collect Mets players, so if we get a nice find, I like to give them away on here.

Information Golden Era of Sports Collecting

Are we in an Information Golden Era of Sports Collecting?

When I started the SportsLocker blog in November, 2007 there wasn't a lot of opinion and information on the internet. If you wanted the latest news and opinion, then you needed to subscribe to the magazines, find a good hobby shop, or hope to find one of the few blogs dedicated to the hobby. There were very few to choose from.

Fast-forward a couple of years and the landscape has really changed. Today, you can read blogs that focus on specific types, certain teams, individual players and the "stats on the back." You can read Beckett's opinion and the anti-Beckett opinion.

If you're into social networking, there are several facebook groups and fan pages run by fellow collectors. Upper Deck and Steiner Sports also do a lot of work on facebook and offer fans special access, sales, and contests.

Personally, I think Twitter made the biggest splash to the collecting world in 2009. Bloggers, corporations, and card manufacturers did more than dip their toe in the pool - they dove in to the deep end. Not only do they tweet when they have a new blog post, but they tweet when they have an opinion. Following collectors and some of the companies on twitter can bring you alerts to sales from Blowout Cards to interesting topics at the Freedom Card Board. If you didn't like the latest box break from Beckett, you can send Tracy Hackler and Chris Olds a message on twitter with your opinion (within 140 characters).

We don't have a shortage of information today. We have more opinions and places to get the latest scoop than I ever could have imaged two years ago. The landscape has changed and continues to evolve. I'm really enjoying this new world of collecting: it's more transparent, has more opinions, and is fun to be a part of.

The New FTC Guidelines Affect Sports Cards Blogs

The new endorsement guidelines presented by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) take effect on December 1, 2009. The guidelines are not new laws, but they help explain how bloggers can avoid being investigated by the FTC for deceptive advertising.

After reviewing the guidelines and reading some other sites, I think the biggest effect to these guidelines will be the free box breaks. This will mostly impact the free boxes that card bloggers receive from manufacturers to review their product. I'm not an attorney and I only picked out the ones I think could be issues with card bloggers. If you're concerned, speak to someone who's a compliance expert.

Personally, I'm against free boxes from the card companies. I've talked about this on the Wax Heaven and Beckett blogs and via twitter with Mario and Chris Olds. However, if you're going to do it, here are some keys to keep you out of FTC trouble.

Area #1 - Testimonial Results
The FTC guides say that testimonials that discuss specific results should provide the typical results a customer could expect. Some kind of "odds of getting a XXX in a box are 1 and XXX. While this mostly targets "adds," could an "add" be a free product sent to a blogger for review and to show on the blog? The box of cards has value, so I think it could fit in this category. So when bloggers pull the 1/1 and other rare relics, they need to disclose that it isn't typical and what the odds are of it happening to someone who buys the product off the shelf. Be clear and obvious on your results and and what customers can expect. Don't mess with "the man."

Area #2 - Disclosures
You need to disclose anything that may affect your credibility of endorsing a product. Meaning, if you take payment from a card manufacturer and you review one of their products, then you need to disclose this relationship. This may even affect online forum posts. If someone pays you for ad space, and you promote their product on another forum without disclosing your relationship, this can cause you problems with the FTC. How do you disclose this? Check with an attorney, but I think a link to a section where you disclose your paid advertisers might suffice as long as you link to that in any box break video or review.

Area #3 - Blogger Endorsement
According to the FTC guidelines, if you take payment to write about a product, then that's considered an "endorsement." Small, free items like a box of cards could be considered an endorsement according to the rules. The guidelines don't mention how much value is considered an endorsement. Is a box of cards that cost $100 considered part of this? Does the box have to cost $500 or more? I don't know. If you went out to a local card shop, bought of box cards and reviewed it, that would be considered an "unsolicited review." I don't think you'd have to disclose anything.

The guidelines also discuss coupons for free products. If a company sends you a coupon for a free product, any review of that product would not be considered an endorsement. That's assuming the coupon is also available to people who do not have blogs to check out new products. Hmm.... that sounds like the voucher system I've been talking about all the time.

Recommendations
To be safe, I would recommend saying, "I received this box free from XYZ Company, they also pay for advertising on this blog, and here's what I think of their latest product." I would say it at the beginning and end of any video or blog box break. You should also clearly list the odds of pulling relics, 1/1s, etc. for the box of cards you opening.

Again, I'm not a lawyer or work in compliance. I don't believe getting a free box of cards to review is in the best interest of the consumer. If you do, please keep these areas in mind so you avoid FTC issues after Dec. 1, 2009.

Here are some helpful links about the new guides. I also referred to a Marketing Sherpa article as some source information.

Free Beckett Media Magazine

I have a few FREE Beckett Cheer! magazines to give-away. These are compliments of Beckett Media (disclosure for my FTC friends).

Last Wednesday I blogged about the newest Beckett Media magazine - Cheer! Tracy Hackler, from Beckett, responded to some of the comments and offered everyone a free copy. I accepted the offer and yesterday I received my box of Cheer!

Get Your Free Copy
If you want a free copy of Cheer!, just leave a comment and I'll send you an email to get your mailing address.

After you receive the magazine and review it, answer the following questions using a 1-5 scale where:
1 = Strongly Disagree,
2 = Slightly Disagree,
3 = Neither Agree nor Disagree,
4 = Slightly Agree
5 = Strongly Agree

Questions:
- The articles were well written.
- The photographs/images were well done.
- You would like to see more cheer leading collectible information in the next issue.
- You would buy the next issue.
- Give me your take - additional comments.

I'll post your answers and your comments. If you have a blog of your own, I can link to those here too.

The 1-5 scale is how I've done short marketing surveys at work. I think the scale will give some consistency and the the additional comments will give you the freedom to rip or praise. I don't have any affiliation with Beckett Media. I did the blog post after reading the announcement on their site.

Taking part in the survey so far are: Rob from VOTC, Laloosh, and Brian from Play at the Plate. They commented on the original blog post and have already agreed to take a look at the magazine.

Gary Carter Goes from Ducks to Sailfish

Gary Carter will not manage the NYMets or one of their minor league teams next season (sigh). Carter won't even be in the tri-state area to get a phone call. This explains why his Long Island Ducks Blog with Newsday has been out-of-order.

The Kid has resigned from managing the independent Long Island Ducks to be closer to home and manage the Division II Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish. Good thing Paul from Paul's Random Stuff picked up the Ducks autograph baseball for me this summer!

Carter may be criticized for jumping in front of any camera with a red light on the top, but he's wins everywhere he goes:

- Gulf Coast League and Florida State League Manager of the Year in 2005 and 2006.
- Port St. Lucie Mets 2006 League Champions
- Orange County (CA) Flyers 2008 Manager of the Year
- Orange County (CA) Flyers Golden Baseball League Champions
- Long Island Ducks playoffs in 2009.
Omar and Fred - are you hearing this?

Good luck to Gary Carter in south Florida. I hope an MLB team calls soon. He's good for the game and is widely regarded as an excellent manager.

The Girls Dig Sports Cards Tweets?

The last few days of Twitter have been interesting. A lot of the sports cards bloggers have been talking about box breaks, hobby ethics, dentists and scary movies (ask Gellman about that one).

It's been pretty fun participating in conversations with SCUnscensored, Wax_Heaven, VOTC, Tracy Hackler, FCBsportscards and Chris Olds.

I had a good time with it, but I didn't know this person liked it too! My 661st follower on twitter is the screen cap here.

Twitter #FollowFriday Sports Card Blogs

If you're on twitter, you are probably familiar with the #FollowFriday Twitter trend. If you're not familiar with #FollowFriday, it's basically a way to recommend people on twitter using the hashtag #FollowFriday.

Twitter users started the trend in January and it's been running every Friday since then. It's easy, you can recommend as many as you want, and it builds good karma!

It's a great to way to alert the people who follow you of other twitter users you enjoy following and reading.

How do you do it?
Log in to twitter and send a tweet like this:
#FollowFriday Sports Cards @VOTC, @Wax_Heaven, @FCBsportscards, @SCUncensored, @UpperDeckSports, @beckettmedia, @blowoutcards

No Twitter No Problem
You don't have to be a twitter user to follow the conversation and see what these accounts tweet about. You can go to twitter.com and search for any of these users. Click on their name once you find them to bring up their twitter page. For example, mine is twitter.com/jamesryanj In the bottom right corner you'll see "RSS feed of JamesRyanJ's tweets." You can subscribe to mine, or anyone's twitter feed by adding the link to RSS reader and begin following the conversation.

Tip: Subscribing to their tweets using RSS is helpful if you want to see what they tweet without the person knowing you are following them. Remember, twitter and social media is extremely transparent, so anyone can follow, read the tweets and see what's out there.

I'll try to get do a #FollowFriday each week for sports cards. Post a comment or send me an email if you'd like your twitter feed and link to your blog to be included next week.
